Senology is the branch of medicine that deals, specifically, with the study of diseases concerning breasts. The term “senology” comes from the word “seno” which is now commonly used as a synonym of “mammella” (breast) (even though in anatomy “seno” should really mean the gap between the two breasts).
If in the past “senology” was pertinent almost exclusively to the gynecology department since breasts were considered primarily female organs (although breasts are actually present also in males, even if in a rudimental form), with time the study of breasts, in all its complexity, and its diseases has been of interest to an increasingly growing number of specialized branches, from endocrinology to radiology, oncology as well as pathological anatomy.
Currently, there isn’t a “senology” specialization, but for about 20 years there have been many attempts to improve and formalize this specialization course, particularly present in the oncology field.
