My breathing was compromised due to a prolonged tracheostomy caused by Covid-19.
I had received various treatments, provided by other hospitals, among which bronchoscopy and cortisone, but none of these were successful.
The only solution was to undergo tracheal surgery in order to remove the two tracheal rings that had been damaged by the stenosis, thus from the narrowing of the canal.
Surgery was done on June 11th and it lasted a few hours.
I was discharged on June 19th after five days of postoperative stay in the intensive care unit and doing physiotherapy needed to regain function in my neck.
I feel I need to thank, in particular, Dr. Umberto Cariboni, head of the advanced thoracic surgery department at Humanitas, who performed the surgery and allowed me to breathe again.
I am thanking him also for two admirable reasons: his professionalism and his availability throughout the entire time I was hospitalized.
